Life#
Born in Kirkuk (Kerkük) in 1859/60 (AH 1276), Zeynelabidin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1875/76, Zeynelabidin began work in Erbil, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1878/79, places Zeynelabidin in Mosul (Musul) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Zeynelabidin to Sulaymaniyah (Süleymaniye) from 1880 to 1886, then Al-Aziziyah (Aziziye) from 1886 to 1888. Next came Deraci from 1888 to 1894, then Yakube, Ramadi and Samawah (Semave) from 1894 to 1900, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1894/95 and to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1899/1900. The last posts were in Al Diwaniyah (Divaniye) from 1900 to 1902.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to 720 in 1899/1900, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Samawah, when four in five paid officials earned less. In all, 24 years of salary come to 142,140 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1901/02.
