Life#
Hasan Hüsnü Efendi was born in Kirkuk (Kerkük) in 1866/67 (AH 1283), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan Hüsnü also wrote Turkish and spoke Arabic and Persian.
Work began in Erbil in 1883/84, at about 17, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1884/85, places Hasan Hüsnü in Mosul (Musul) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Hasan Hüsnü then moved to Sulaymaniyah (Süleymaniye) from 1885 to 1887, then back to Mosul from 1887 to 1889. The annual lists then follow Hasan Hüsnü back to Kirkuk, the birthplace, from 1889 to 1892, then Basra from 1892 to 1895. Next came a return to Kirkuk from 1895 to 1898, then Deyzi from 1898 to 1904. The last posts were in Baghdad in 1904/05 and Cemcemal in 1905/06.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to 540 in 1898/99, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Deyzi, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06. Hasan Hüsnü probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahval Defterlerine göre Kerküklü devlet adamları" by ORHAN ABDULBASIT ANWER ANWER (2021) (the name, the birthplace and a place of service agree).
