Life#
Artin Noris Efendi was born in Bergama in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a jeweller (kuyumcu). Work began in Bergama in 1880/81, at about 15, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1884/85, places Artin Noris in Bergama, the birthplace, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1892/93. The annual lists then follow Artin Noris to Hayrabolu from 1893 to 1900, then Himarë in 1900/01, as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür). The last posts were in Ioannina (Yanya) from 1901 to 1906.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to 500 in 1900/01, the peak, as 3. Müdür in Himarë, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 400 kuruş. Over 22 years pay ended where it began, at 400 kuruş; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
