Life#
Born in Kayseri in 1866/67 (AH 1283), Ohannes Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a customs official (rüsumat memuru). Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Ohannes also wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of French.
Ohannes began work in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 22, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 60 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1889/90, to 1894/95, every annual entry places Ohannes in the same post, official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru), in Istanbul.
The salary went from 60 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to 140 in 1892/93, the peak, as Mersule Memuru in Istanbul, when 6 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, six years of salary come to 8,160 kuruş, 22 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1894/95. Ohannes probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl kayıtlarına göre Kayseri doğumlu Gayrimüslim Osmanlı devlet adamları ..." by YAĞMUR ŞAHİN (2017) (the name and the birthplace agree).
