Life

Born in Bergama in 1881/82 (AH 1299) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Rüşdi Efendi was the child of a teacher (muallim). Mehmet Rüşdi had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

At about 17, in 1899/1900, Mehmet Rüşdi began work in Bergama, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1903/04, places Mehmet Rüşdi in Prilep (Pirlepe) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The lists have no entry for 1904 to 1907. The last post was in Aydın in 1907/08.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1903/04, as Muhabere Memuru in Prilep, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
