Life#
Ali Bedri Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Cerrah". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Ali Bedri began work in Istanbul in 1882/83, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1884/85, places Ali Bedri in Istanbul, the birthplace, in the dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi), where the entries run to 1887/88. Next came Beyoğlu from 1888 to 1897, then Devebagirtan, Karaburun, Buyuk karaburun and Skopje (Üsküp), four places in six years. The last posts were in Lüleburgaz from 1903 to 1905.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to a peak of 540 in 1897/98, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Devebagirtan, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 20 years the salaries add up to 83,340 kuruş, 69 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
