Life#
Mehmet Emin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1866/67 (AH 1283), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Emin began work in Istanbul in 1883/84, at about 17, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1884/85 to 1906/07 places Mehmet Emin in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1895/96 in the stamp clerkship (Pul Kitabeti).
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to a peak of 550 in 1903/04, in the Pul Kitabeti in Istanbul, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less.
