Life#
Born in Yakube in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Salih Sabri Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Salih Sabri also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Salih Sabri began work in Yakube in 1882/83, at about 14, paid from the start, on 142 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Salih Sabri as an official for written correspondence (Muharrerat Memuru) in Yakube, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1884/85. Salih Sabri then moved to Sulaymaniyah (Süleymaniye) from 1885 to 1898, then Al-Shatrah (Şatra) from 1898 to 1900. The last posts were in Baghdad (Bağdat) from 1900 to 1906, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru).
Pay rose from 142 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 400 in 1900/01, as Muhabere Memuru in Baghdad, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 24 years the salaries add up to 59,664 kuruş, 41 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
