Life#
Osman Efendi was born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1868/69 (AH 1285), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1882/83, Osman began work in Birecik, paid from the start, on 142 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1882/83, with Osman as Musillik in Birecik, where the entries run to 1891/92. Next came Gaziantep (Antep) from 1892 to 1898, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Zor in 1898/99 and Jisr al-Shughur (Cisr-i Şugur) in 1899/1900.
The salary went from 142 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to 500 in 1898/99, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Zor, when 48 per cent of paid officials earned less.
