Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1865/66 (AH 1282), Mehmet Nuri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a senior army captain (kolağası). Mehmet Nuri began work in Jeddah (Cidde) in 1883/84, at about 18, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1883/84, with Mehmet Nuri as Musillik in Jeddah. Next came Mecca (Mekke) from 1884 to 1888. From 1888 to 1899 the annual entries place Mehmet Nuri again in Jeddah, first as a postal official (Posta Memuru), from 1898/99 as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Mecca, about 2,400 km from Istanbul, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 630 in 1898/99, as Muhabere Memuru in Jeddah, when three in four paid officials earned less. The list of 1898/99 (AH 1316) gives the status word Vefat (death).
Places in order of time#
Each number is a stop: the birthplace, the place of first work, then every place of the annual entries in turn. The year beside an arrow is the first entry at the new place.
