Life#
Born in Thessaloniki (Selanik) in 1865/66 (AH 1282), Hasan Sabri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tax collector (tahsildar). Hasan Sabri had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi), and wrote Turkish and spoke Greek (Rum).
Work began in Aydın in 1894/95, at about 29, paid from the start, on 600 kuruş a month. Fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 29 or older. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Hasan Sabri as a central office official (Merkez Memuru) in Aydın, where the entries run to 1897/98. In 1898/99 the lists place Hasan Sabri in Izmir (İzmir).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 600 kuruş a month in 1894/95, as Merkez Memuru in Aydın, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1898/99.
