Life#
Mehmet Ziya Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1875/76 (AH 1292), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Muhendis". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 17, in 1892/93, Mehmet Ziya began work in İnebolu, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Mehmet Ziya in the Ambar Kalemi in Aydın. The lists have no entry for 1895 to 1897. Next came Beyoğlu from 1897 to 1902, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1902 to 1905.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 380 in 1904/05, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Istanbul, when 35 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, nine years of salary come to 25,920 kuruş, 48 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
