Life#
Haci Ömer Efendi was born in Kafkasya in 1837/38 (AH 1253), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a primary school (İbtidai Mektebi).
At about 57, in 1894/95, Ömer began work in the postal service (Posta) in Aydın, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, 2 started at 57 or older. The annual lists begin in 1894/95, with Ömer as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in Aydın, where the entries run to 1899/1900. The last posts were in Söke from 1900 to 1905, first as Seyyar Memur, from 1903/04 as a transport official (Nakliye Memuru) and from 1904/05 with no title named.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1894/95 to 500 in 1902/03, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Söke, when half the paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 300 kuruş. Over ten years pay ended where it began, at 300 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1904/05. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl kayıtlarına göre Kafkas doğumlu devlet memurları" by SULTAN AYDIN (2023) probably refers to Ömer, since the name and the birthplace agree.
