Life#
İbrahim Hakki Efendi was born in Kafkasya in 1840/41 (AH 1256) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 23, in 1863/64, İbrahim Hakki began work in Çanakkale, on a first salary of 40 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1871/72, with İbrahim Hakki in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi) in Kos (İstanköy), where the entries run to 1873/74. Next came Çanakkale and Payas from 1875 to 1878, with a rise to a post in the Land Registry office (Defter-i Hakani Kalemi) in 1876/77, then Amarah (Amare) from 1878 to 1884. İbrahim Hakki then moved to Karbala (Kerbela) from 1884 to 1890. The last post was in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1890/91, with a rise to DH Muduru. In place of a title the lists give Infisal for 1874/75, İstifa (resignation) for 1878 and Vefat (death) for 1891/92.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to a peak of 3,000 in 1890/91, as DH Muduru in Baghdad, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 19 years the salaries add up to 240,600 kuruş, 2 times what an official on the median salary earned. The list of 1891/92 (AH 1309) gives the status word Vefat (death). İbrahim Hakki received a rank (rütbe).
