Life#
Born in Mosul (Musul) in 1848/49 (AH 1265) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community, Süleyman Doryan Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). At about 22, in 1871/72, Süleyman Doryan began work in Samawah (Semave), paid from the start, on 800 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1871/72, with Süleyman Doryan as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Samawah. Next came four places in seven years, then a return to Basra from 1879 to 1883. The annual lists then follow Süleyman Doryan to Amarah (Amare) and Basra from 1883 to 1889, with a rise to director of the first grade (1. Müdür) in 1886/87, then back to Baghdad from 1892 to 1898. The last posts were in Al-Faw in 1902/03, as a chief official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru), and Bursa in 1903/04 and Beyoğlu from 1904 to 1906.
Pay rose from 800 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to a peak of 1,650 in 1902/03, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Başmemuru in Al-Faw, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 1,000 kuruş. Over 27 years pay ended below where it began, 500 kuruş against 800; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
