Life#
Born in Sidon (Sayda) in 1850/51 (AH 1267) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community, Habib Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Habib had four years of schooling, at a special school (Mekteb-i Mahsusa).
Work began in Sidon in 1863/64, at about 13, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places Habib in Tarsus as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Habib then moved to Acre (Akka), Gaza (Gazze) and Çanakkale from 1870 to 1877, then back to Acre from 1877 to 1886. Next came Jaffa (Yafa) from 1886 to 1889. The last posts were in Deir al-Qamar (Deyrülkamer) from 1889 to 1894. Fewer than 10 per cent of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 600 in 1878, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Acre, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1893/94; the list of 1894/95 (AH 1312) gives the status word Vefat (death).
