Life#
Born in Sidon (Sayda) in 1845 (AH 1261), Selim Efendi came from the Latin Catholic (Latin) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi). Selim knew four languages, Arabic, French, Italian and Turkish, all in writing, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
At about 17, in 1862/63, Selim began work in Sidon, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, places Selim in Tripoli (Trablusşam) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Selim to Gaza (Gazze), Damascus (Şam), Beirut (Beyrut) and Acre (Akka), four places in eight years, with a rise to Sifre Memuru in 1872/73, then Haifa (Hayfa) from 1876 to 1885. Next came Çemişgezek, Mersin and Acre from 1885 to 1889. The last posts were in Haifa again from 1889 to 1897, first as Muhabere Memuru, from 1892/93 as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür) and from 1896/97 as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to a peak of 800 in 1876/77, as 2. Müdür in Haifa, when two in three paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1896/97, the list of 1897/98 (AH 1315) gives the status word Vefat (death).
