Life#
Fetullah Nuri Efendi was born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1845/46 (AH 1262), into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Fetullah Nuri also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish.
Fetullah Nuri began work in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1865/66, at about 19, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places Fetullah Nuri in Jaffa (Yafa) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Fetullah Nuri then moved to Gaza (Gazze), Damascus (Şam), Tekirdağ and Alexandroupoli (Dedeağaç), four places in five years, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1873/74. From 1875 to 1899 the annual entries place Fetullah Nuri in Nicosia (Lefkoşa).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to a peak of 1,000 in 1873/74, as 2. Müdür in Alexandroupoli, when four in five paid officials earned less. Over 31 years the salaries add up to 269,784 kuruş, 1.4 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1898/99.
