Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1845/46 (AH 1262) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community, Ohannes Bogosyan Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi). In all Ohannes Bogosyan knew four languages, Armenian and French in writing and Greek (Rum) and Turkish in speech; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
Work began in Aleppo (Halep) in 1866/67, at about 20, paid from the start, on 576 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1866/67, with Ohannes Bogosyan as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Aleppo. Ohannes Bogosyan then moved to Mersin from 1869 to 1871, with a rise to Sef in 1869/70, then Edirne from 1871 to 1878. Next came Ioannina (Yanya) and Keşan from 1878 to 1883, then Bursa from 1883 to 1892. The last posts were in Drama from 1893 to 1896. Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 7 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 576 kuruş a month in 1866/67 to 800 in 1869/70, the peak, as Sef in Mersin, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 28 years the salaries add up to 247,152 kuruş, 1.4 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1895/96.
