Life#
Mihran Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1857/58 (AH 1274) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Mihran also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
At about 16, in 1873/74, Mihran began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 450 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1874/75, places Mihran in Bosna as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti). For 1875 to 1878 the lists have no entry. The last posts were in Basra from 1878 to 1887.
Pay rose from 450 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to a peak of 760 in 1878/79, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Basra, when two in three paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1886/87.
