Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1857/58 (AH 1274) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet İzzet Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Ahmet İzzet had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1874/75, Ahmet İzzet began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1876/77, with Ahmet İzzet as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Ruse (Rusçuk). Next came Tulcea (Tulça), Bilecik, Kütahya, Karacabey (Mihaliç) and Zuwara (Zuvara), five places in seven years, then Meslata from 1883 to 1888, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür). Ahmet İzzet then moved to Fasatu and Tripoli (Trablusgarp) from 1888 to 1893. The last posts were in Garbiyye from 1893 to 1898, first as a director of the first grade (1. Müdür), from 1896/97 as 2. Müdür. Few officials served on three continents (Africa, Asia and Europe); fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to a peak of 1,200 in 1893/94, as 1. Müdür in Garbiyye, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1897/98, the list of 1898/99 (AH 1316) gives the status word Vefat (death).
