Life#
Born in Bursa in 1857/58 (AH 1274), Kâmil Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (katip). Kâmil had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Bursa in 1875/76, at about 17, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Kâmil in Karacabey (Mihaliç) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow Kâmil to four places in six years. The last posts were in Buyuk karaburun from 1883 to 1885.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 475 in 1883/84, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Buyuk karaburun, when 40 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, ten years of salary come to 45,240 kuruş, 70 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1884/85. An entry in "Sicill-i Ahval defterlerine göre Bursalı memurlar" by DERVİŞ ŞAFAK TOPRAK (2019) probably refers to Kâmil, since the name, the birthplace and a place of service agree.
