Life#
Born in Malatya in 1837/38 (AH 1253), Osman Nuri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Osman Nuri also knew four languages, Turkish in writing, Arabic and Kurdish in speech and Persian a little. Kurdish was rare in the service, known to 12 of the 5,211 officials.
Osman Nuri began work in 1855/56, at about 18, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1866/67, names Osman Nuri as Zaptiye Teftis Memuriyeti, with no place. Next came Niğde from 1867 to 1874, then Karacabey (Mihaliç) from 1874 to 1878. Osman Nuri then moved to Lapseki from 1878 to 1882. The last post was in Genç in 1882/83, with a rise to a post in the Land Registry office (Defter-i Hakani Kalemi).
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1866/67 to 760 in 1874/75, the peak, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Karacabey, when two in three paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1882/83.
