Life#
Abdürreşid Sabit İzzet was born in Malatya in 1854/55 (AH 1271) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Abdürreşid Sabit İzzet also attended the telegraph school.
At about 17, in 1872/73, Abdürreşid Sabit İzzet began work in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1874/75, with Abdürreşid Sabit İzzet as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Niğde, where the entries run to 1876/77. The last posts were in Thessaloniki in 1879/80 and Malatya, the birthplace, in 1886/87.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1874/75, as Muhabere Memuru in Niğde, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1886/87. Abdürreşid Sabit İzzet probably has an entry in "Sicill-i ahval defterlerine göre Malatya doğumlu memurlar: 1879-1909" by RAMAZAN ÇELEM (2014) (the name, the birthplace and a place of service agree).
