Life#
Born in Edirne in 1854/55 (AH 1271), Hüseyin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Hüseyin had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Kavala in 1870/71, at about 16, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 220 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1874/75, places Hüseyin in Thessaloniki (Selanik) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Hüseyin then moved to Skopje (Üsküp), Gelibolu and Ioannina (Yanya) from 1875 to 1882, then Zagor from 1882 to 1888. The annual lists then follow Hüseyin to Skopje in 1888/89. The last posts were in Gostivar from 1889 to 1893. Fewer than 10 per cent of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more kept one title throughout.
Pay rose from 220 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to a peak of 500 in 1882/83, as Muhabere Memuru in Zagor, when 43 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 20 years the salaries add up to 105,120 kuruş, 84 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. After the last annual entry, for 1892/93, the list of 1893/94 (AH 1311) gives the status word Vefat (death).
