Life#
Ahmet Necip Efendi was born in Balchik (Balçık) in 1854/55 (AH 1271) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Liman Reisi". Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Ahmet Necip began work in Burgas (Burgaz) in 1867/68, at about 13, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 13 or younger. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places Ahmet Necip in Svishtov (Ziştovi) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Ahmet Necip then moved to Burgas and Yambol (Yanbolu) from 1870 to 1878. For 1878 to 1879 the lists have no entry. From 1879 to 1895 every annual entry places Ahmet Necip in Karadeniz Ereğli.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 600 in 1876/77, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Yambol, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, 25 years of salary come to 160,080 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years.
