Life#
Mustafa Eşref Efendi was born in Oryahovo (Rahova) in 1857/58 (AH 1274) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mustafa Eşref began work in Oryahovo in 1875/76, at about 17, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Mustafa Eşref as Muvassil in Oryahovo, the birthplace. Mustafa Eşref then moved to Vidin and Kastamonu from 1876 to 1882, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1876/77, then Karadeniz Ereğli from 1882 to 1888. Next came Veles in 1888/89, then Bayburt from 1890 to 1899. The annual lists then follow Mustafa Eşref to Samsun from 1899 to 1904. The last posts were in Divriği in 1904/05 and Mudawwara in 1906/07 and Beyobasi in 1907/08. Eight provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to 800 in 1906/07, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Mudawwara, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 500 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
