Life#
Born in Oryahovo (Rahova) in 1872/73 (AH 1289) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Tevfik Efendi was the child of a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Mehmet Tevfik began work in Kardzhali (Kırcaali) in 1892/93, at about 20, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1892/93, with Mehmet Tevfik as Muvassil in Kardzhali, where the entries run to 1900/01. Mehmet Tevfik then moved to Kosukavak from 1901 to 1909. The last posts were in Kilisekule from 1909 to 1911 and Smolyan (Ahiçelebi) in 1911. Of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, fewer than 10 per cent kept one title throughout.
