Life#
Yusuf Enis Efendi was born in Plovdiv (Filibe) in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 17, in 1878, Yusuf Enis began work in Plovdiv, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1880/81, places Yusuf Enis in Plovdiv, the birthplace, as an official (Memur). For 1881 to 1886 the lists have no entry. The annual lists then follow Yusuf Enis to Kardzhali (Kırcaali) from 1886 to 1904, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1894/95. The last posts were in Zlatograd (Darıdere) from 1904 to 1907.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to a peak of 500 in 1894/95, as 3. Müdür in Kardzhali, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 22 years of salary come to 114,000 kuruş, 87 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
