Life#
Born in Plovdiv (Filibe) in 1862/63 (AH 1279), this official came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); the official also wrote French as well as Turkish.
The official began work in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 25, paid from the start, on 600 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1887/88, with the official as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Sirkeci. The official then moved to Yeni camii postanesi in 1888/89, then Izmir (İzmir) from 1889 to 1898, with a rise to Mekatib Basmemuru in 1890/91 and to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1895/96. The last post was in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1898/99.
The salary went from 600 kuruş a month in 1887/88 to 1,150 in 1895/96, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Izmir, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. On average the pay stood in the top 18.2 per cent of each year's paid officials; fewer than 6 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more stood as high. The last annual entry is for 1898/99.
