Life#
Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi was born in Trabzon in 1849/50 (AH 1266) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Hüseyin Hüsnü began work in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Trabzon in 1861/62, at about 12, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1865/66, places Hüseyin Hüsnü in Şebinkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Şarki) in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi). Next came six places in 15 years, then Urfele from 1887 to 1893. Hüseyin Hüsnü then moved to Zuwara (Zuvara) from 1893 to 1901, then Lebet, Beyker and Ibb (İbb) from 1901 to 1905, with a rise to director (Müdür) in 1904/05. The last posts were in Yemen from 1905 to 1907, with a rise to assistant inspector (Müfettiş Muavini). In all, 13 places on three continents, a number reached by only 38 of the 5,200 officials with a place of service. Entries spanning 43 years are rare, reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to 2,300 in 1905/06, the peak, as Müfettiş Muavini in Yemen, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak was 46 times the first salary, a rise matched by 35 of the 2,859 officials paid for ten years or more. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
