Life#
Mustafa Ragıp Efendi was born in Kemah in 1848/49 (AH 1265), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Ragıp also attended the telegraph school.
At about 21, in 1870/71, Mustafa Ragıp began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Erzincan, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1870/71, places Mustafa Ragıp in Erzincan as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1877/78. The last post was in Kemah, the birthplace, in 1878, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür).
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to a peak of 1,000 in 1878, as 2. Müdür in Kemah, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1878.
