Life#
Hacı Mehmet Mecit Efendi was born in Kemah in 1845/46 (AH 1262) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1862/63, Mehmet Mecit began work in Erzincan, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1863/64, to 1868/69, every annual entry places Mehmet Mecit in the same post, official (Memur), in Ağrı (Karakilise).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1863/64, as Memur in Ağrı, when 15 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over six years the salaries add up to 19,800 kuruş, 46 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1868/69.
