Life#
Mehmed Nafiz Efendi was born in Taşköprü in 1838/39 (AH 1254) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in the postal service (Posta) in Istanbul in 1857/58, at about 19, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1857/58, with Mehmed Nafiz as an official (Memur) in Rumelihisarı. Next came Bursa from 1858 to 1868. At the same time, from 1859/60, the lists also place Mehmed Nafiz in Bozkır as a district governor (Kaymakam), with a rise to Kaymakam.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1857/58 to a peak of 1,250 in 1859/60, as Kaymakam in Bozkır, when 83 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 500 kuruş. The final annual entry is for 1867/68. Mehmed Nafiz probably has an entry in "Sicill-i ahvâl kayıtlarına göre Taşköprülü memurlar" by VİLDAN ŞAHİN (2023) (the name and the birthplace agree).
