Life#
Born in Kemah in 1838/39 (AH 1254) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ali Rıza Eendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Ali Rıza Eendi had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 18, in 1856/57, Ali Rıza Eendi began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 250 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1857/58, with Ali Rıza Eendi as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Trikala (Tırhala). Ali Rıza Eendi then moved to Ioannina (Yanya) from 1858 to 1865, then Bar from 1865 to 1871, with a rise to 2. Posta Muduru. The annual lists then follow Ali Rıza Eendi to Edirne from 1871 to 1878, with a rise to 1. Posta Muduru in 1874/75. The last posts were in Istanbul from 1878 to 1883.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1857/58 to 1,245 in 1874/75, the peak, as 1. Posta Muduru in Edirne, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 27 years the salaries add up to 292,740 kuruş, 1.6 times what an official on the median salary earned.
