Life#
Born in Edirne in 1841/42 (AH 1257), Nuri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 21, in 1862/63, Nuri began work in Edirne, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1867/68, with Nuri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Karnobat (Karinabad). Next came a return to Edirne, the birthplace, from 1868 to 1877, then Babaeski (Baba-yı Atik) from 1877 to 1878. For 1878 to 1885 the lists have no entry. From 1885 to 1896 the annual entries place Nuri again in Edirne.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to 600 in 1870/71, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Edirne, when half the paid officials earned less. Over 23 years the salaries add up to 143,400 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned.
