Life#
Born in Nigbolu in 1859/60 (AH 1276), Hasan Mehdi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan Mehdi also wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Nigbolu in 1873/74, at about 14, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, places Hasan Mehdi in Shumen (Şumnu) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The lists have no entry for 1877 to 1880. Hasan Mehdi then moved to Van, Ahtopol (Ahtabolu) and Vize from 1880 to 1884, then Edirne from 1885 to 1890. The annual lists then follow Hasan Mehdi to Evreşe from 1890 to 1892. The last posts were in Malkara from 1892 to 1897.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to a peak of 600 in 1885/86, as Muhabere Memuru in Edirne, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1896/97.
