Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1853/54 (AH 1270), Mehmet Sadettin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Kasap". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Sadettin also attended the telegraph school.
Work began in Istanbul in 1877/78, at about 23, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1880/81, with Mehmet Sadettin as an official (Memur) in Istanbul, the birthplace. Mehmet Sadettin then moved to Chania (Hanya) and Edirne from 1882 to 1891, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1882/83. From 1891 to 1907 the annual entries place Mehmet Sadettin again in Istanbul.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to 400 in 1887/88, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Edirne, when 27 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 26 years of salary come to 94,560 kuruş, 61 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
