Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1853/54 (AH 1270), Agop Maryan Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Agop Maryan had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi). In all Agop Maryan knew four languages, Armenian, French and Turkish in writing and Greek (Rum) in speech; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
Work began in Beyoğlu in 1872/73, at about 18, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Agop Maryan as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Mostar. Agop Maryan then moved to Beyoğlu from 1877 to 1894, then Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa) from 1894 to 1896, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur) in 1894/95. Next came a return to Beyoğlu from 1896 to 1903. The last posts were in Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1904 to 1907.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to 750 in 1894/95, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Svilengrad, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 31 years of salary come to 184,620 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
