Life#
Hafız Hasan Efendi was born in Prilep (Pirlepe) in 1853/54 (AH 1270) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tax collector (tahsildar). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan also wrote Turkish and spoke Bulgarian and Greek (Rum), and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Hasan began work in Bitola (Manastır) in 1875/76, at about 21, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Hasan as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Bitola. Hasan then moved back to Prilep, the birthplace, from 1877 to 1878, then Kozani (Kozana) and Elbasan (İlbasan) from 1878 to 1882. Next came a return to Bitola from 1882 to 1884, then eight places in nine years, from Sjenica (Seniçe) to Bitola. The last post was in Strumica (Ustrumca) in 1893/94. In all, 12 places, a number reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
The salary went from 400 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to 600 in 1886/87, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Laktokarye, when 59 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1893/94; the list of 1894/95 (AH 1312) gives the status word Vefat (death).
