Life#
This official was born in Istanbul in 1856/57 (AH 1273), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took 14 years, at the School of Medicine (Tıbbiye Mektebi).
At about 24, in 1880/81, the official began work in Beyoğlu, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 380 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1884/85, places the official in Edirne in the sorting room (Tefrik Odası), where the entries run to 1892/93. Next came Maltepe, Tavşancıl and Gebze from 1893 to 1896, then a return to Maltepe from 1896 to 1898. The official then moved to Bebek and Galata from 1898 to 1902, then back to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1902 to 1904. The last posts were in Medina (Medine) from 1904 to 1908, with a rise to official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) and to acting director (Müdür Vekili) in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 380 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to a peak of 1,500 in 1905/06, as Müdür Vekili in Medina, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 23 years of salary come to 176,208 kuruş, 1.3 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1907/08.
