Life#
Born in Nigbolu in 1870/71 (AH 1287), Salih Sabri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Salih Sabri had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and wrote Turkish and spoke Bulgarian.
Work began in Florina in 1887/88, at about 17, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1889/90, places Salih Sabri in Skopje (Üsküp) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Salih Sabri then moved to Mitrovica (Mitroviça) from 1891 to 1896, then back to Skopje from 1896 to 1902. Next came Sjenica in 1902/03. The last posts were in Preševo (Preşova) from 1903 to 1906.
The salary went from 285 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to 500 in 1903/04, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Preševo, when 51 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
