Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1870/71 (AH 1287), Hasan Tahsin Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 18, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. From 1889/90 to 1905/06 every annual entry places Hasan Tahsin in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the Mühimme Kalemi, from 1892/93 as a travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur), from 1893/94 in the office for important affairs (Mühimme Kalemi) and from 1900/01 in the money order office (Havalename Kalemi).
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to a peak of 1,000 in 1904/05, in the Havalename Kalemi in Istanbul, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak was 20 times the first salary, a rise matched by fewer than 5 per cent of the 2,859 officials paid for ten years or more. The last annual entry is for 1905/06; the list of 1906/07 (AH 1324) gives the status word Vefat (death).
