Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1870/71 (AH 1287), this official came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a teacher (muallim). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
The official began work in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 17, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 60 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1889/90, to 1900/01, every annual entry places the official in the same post, official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru), in Istanbul, the birthplace.
The salary went from 60 kuruş a month in 1889/90 to 500 in 1899/1900, the peak, as Mersule Memuru in Istanbul, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less.
