Life#
Mehmet Muhittin Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1869/70 (AH 1286) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a muezzin. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Muhittin also wrote Arabic, French and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Mehmet Muhittin began work in Istanbul in 1888/89, at about 19, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 60 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1889/90, with Mehmet Muhittin as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Istanbul, the birthplace. Mehmet Muhittin then moved to Mecca in 1890/91 and Al Hudaydah in 1891/92, then back to Mecca from 1892 to 1896. Next came Bekaa and Jeddah (Cidde) from 1897 to 1903. The last posts were in Medina (Medine) from 1903 to 1906. Al Hudaydah, about 3,200 km from Istanbul, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 60 kuruş a month in 1889/90, as Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti in Istanbul, when 1 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
