Life

Born in Kastamonu in 1861/62 (AH 1278), Osman Nuri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a servant (hizmetli). Osman Nuri had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

At about 17, in 1878/79, Osman Nuri began work in Kastamonu, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1880/81, with Osman Nuri as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Kastamonu, the birthplace. Osman Nuri then moved to Sinop, Latakia (Lazkiye) and Giresun from 1882 to 1890. The last posts were in Mecca (Mekke) from 1890 to 1893. Mecca, about 2,300 km from Kastamonu, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.

The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to 750 in 1890/91, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Mecca, when three in four paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1892/93, the list of 1893/94 (AH 1311) gives the status word Vefat (death).
