Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1845/46 (AH 1262), Mehmet Nakib Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an examining clerk (mümeyyiz). Mehmet Nakib had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 15, in 1860/61, Mehmet Nakib began work in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 350 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1863/64, places Mehmet Nakib in Shumen (Şumnu) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Mehmet Nakib then moved to seven places in 11 years, from Beirut (Beyrut) to Latakia (Lazkiye), with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1875/76, then Jaffa (Yafa) from 1876 to 1881. Next came Baalbek from 1881 to 1887. From 1887 to 1897 every annual entry places Mehmet Nakib again in Latakia. Eight provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
The salary went from 350 kuruş a month in 1863/64 to 1,000 in 1869/70, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Muş, when 71 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 33 years the salaries add up to 321,312 kuruş, 1.5 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1896/97.
