Life#
Mehmet Sadık Efendi was born in Kastamonu in 1859/60 (AH 1276) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Sadık also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 14, in 1873/74, Mehmet Sadık began work in the Mektubi Kalemi in Kastamonu, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 30 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1879/80 to 1884/85 places Mehmet Sadık in Kastamonu, the birthplace, first in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi), from 1880/81 as a postal official (Posta Memuru).
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to a peak of 300 in 1880/81, as Posta Memuru in Kastamonu, when 15 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, six years of salary come to 18,600 kuruş, 51 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1884/85.
