Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1858/59 (AH 1275), Cevri Baha Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Cevri Baha also attended the telegraph school.
At about 15, in 1873/74, Cevri Baha began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1874/75, places Cevri Baha in Drama as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Cevri Baha then moved back to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1876 to 1879, then Kastamonu from 1880 to 1886. Next came Samsun from 1886 to 1900. The last posts were in Bayburt from 1900 to 1903 and Samsun again from 1903 to 1905, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1900/01.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to 1,000 in 1903/04, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Samsun, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 31 years of salary come to 181,920 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
