Life#
Born in Kastamonu in 1857/58 (AH 1274) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, İsmail Hakkı Efendi was the child of a farmer (çiftçi). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
İsmail Hakkı began work in Manisa in 1883/84, at about 26, paid from the start, on 400 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1883/84, places İsmail Hakkı in Manisa as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The annual lists then follow İsmail Hakkı back to Kastamonu, the birthplace, from 1884 to 1893, then Çerkeş from 1893 to 1905, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür). The last post was in Bartın in 1905/06.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1883/84 to a peak of 500 in 1893/94, as 3. Müdür in Çerkeş, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 23 years of salary come to 124,320 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
